The Cinema Corner – November 11th

Movie of the week - Mulholland Drive

Movie of the week – Mulholland Drive

Earlier this year the BBC published a poll of the best movies of the century. The number one spot was taken by David Lynch’s surreal masterpiece Mulholland Drive, which you can catch at the Lighthouse on Wednesday as part of their ongoing Lynch season. One of the greatest cinematic experiences of recent decades, it’s a must see on the big screen. Before that you can catch Lynch’s Lost Highway late Friday night.

Arrival

Arrival

It’s a quiet week for new releases but we do have a gem in the form of Arrival. Amy Adams stars as a linguist called up by the military to attempt to communicate with the alien race that has docked several of its space craft over random parts of the earth. It’s a welcome slice of thoughtful sci-fi from a director (Denis Villeneuve) who’s on quite a run at the moment, following Enemy and Sicario.

Matinee

Matinee

Director Joe Dante’s love letter to the b-movies of the 1950s, Matinee, plays at the Irish Film Institute on Sunday afternoon. John Goodman delivers a career best performance in a role based on huckster movie producer William Castle, who was famous for employing outlandish gimmicks to entice audiences to his movies. A delight.

Clash

Clash

Beginning Friday and continuing over the weekend, the IFI hosts the annual Arabic Film Festival. This year’s edition features five movies, a mix of fiction and documentary. The highlight is Mohamed Diab’s Clash, playing Friday, which drew much acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
