Movie of the week - Nocturnal Animals

Movie of the week – Nocturnal Animals

Fashion designer Tom Ford turned filmmaker back in 2009 with the Colin Firth starring A Single Man. While it’s taken seven years for a followup, it was worth the wait. Nocturnal Animals is one of the year’s best films, the story of a disillusioned woman (Amy Adams) who begins to revisit her past while reading a manuscript of a novel about to be published by her ex-husband (Jake Gyllenhaal). Ford visualises the novel as a story within the main narrative, essentially giving us two movies for the price of one, and they’re both great.

The Light Between Oceans

The Light Between Oceans

Real life couple Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander play a husband and wife unable to bear a child in The Light Between Oceans. When a baby washes up on the shore of their remote Australian island home, they decide to pass it off as their own. All goes well until they encounter the child’s mother (Rachel Weisz). An unashamedly old school drama and perfect Sunday afternoon viewing.

The Accountant

The Accountant

Ben Affleck plays an autistic accountant with a sideline in murder in muddled thriller The Accountant. The film ties itself in knots by attempting to weave too many narratives together, and the effect is like watching a season of a TV show edited down to two confusing and unsatisfying hours.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me

The Lighthouse continues its David Lynch season with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the spinoff from his cult TV show. While fans were disappointed at the time with how it failed to tie up the show’s various loose threads, its reputation has grown, and its well worth seeing on the big screen.
