Decemberfest in Donnybrook

By Eoin Meegan

Fancy a little bit of Alpine magic without having to travel to the Alps this Christmas? Then why not come along to Donnybrook where Decemberfest has blasted into action. Located at Morehampton Road/Belmont Avenue in what used to be O’Connell’s restaurant Decemberfest opened at the end of November and will stay open until January 13th, from Wednesday to Sunday.  A kind of pop up festive event that promises to bring a bit of ski life to Dublin.

I visited it last weekend and found the atmosphere relaxed, laid back, the music contemporary but not deafening. It is gaily festooned with Christmas lights, and just what you would expect from your Apres Ski. All dishes are €15 and include bratwurst with sauerkraut on a brioche bun, succulent Angus burgers with fries, or you can sample some currywurst and fries, a speciality that lovers of Berlin will recognise. Excellent value as they are very generous portions. Beers are €11 for a hugh tankard (think October Beerfest) and €6 for a half.

Overall the Lodge has a chilled out factor that should appeal to all types, whether you just want to pop in for an hour or party the night away. Entry is free but be warned as it gets nearer Christmas you may not get a seat. You can reserve a table by booking a  €30 Lodge Pass, which will get you seating reservation, a drink of your choice and a lodge food platter. Parties of over 15 can reserve a €60 lodge pass that includes the above plus two hours free bar!

The event is organised by restauranteur Oliver Dunne in partnership with Erdinger, the German beer manufacturer,

Decemberfest is now taking bookings online via their website, or by email info@decemberfest.ie or by phone (01) 269 6116. Sounds like an event not to be missed.
