There are some gems for movie lovers this week. The best of the lot is The Tribe, a fascinating Ukrainian drama set in a boarding school for the deaf. Playing out entirely through sign language with no narration or subtitles, it’s a stunning piece of visual storytelling unlike anything you’ll have seen before.
Fans of cult director Sam Fuller are advised to check out A Fuller Life, a compelling new documentary directed by his daughter Samantha in which a host of actors and directors perform extracts from his memoirs. The film also features newly unearthed footage shot by Fuller during his time as an infantryman in World War II.
This week’s big blockbuster is Mad Max: Fury Road. Three decades in the making, it’s a brilliantly choreographed action fest, though its set pieces do lack variation, and Tom Hardy can’t quite fill the desert boots vacated by Mel Gibson.
Kristen Stewart answers her many critics with a standout performance alongside Juliette Binoche in Clouds of Sils Maria. The pair play an aging actress and her young assistant and both deliver captivating turns, making up for a weak script.
