“Roll up, Roll Up. The magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away” wrote the Beatles back in 1967. Fifty years later and Ringsend’s own mystery tour kicked off last night as local residents boarded a special orange double decker bus that took them on a voyage of discovery and fun through the streets of Dublin 4.
The tour, which continues tonight and tomorrow, follows the number 1 bus route and takes commuters from outside St. Patrick’s Church on Thorncastle Street (leaving at 8pm), to stop off at various points along the way. There is an on-board conductor who tells jokes and old stories, a juggler, and a guitar playing singer.
A stop at St. Patrick’s Church in Sandymount treats you to an excerpt of a play about a nautical romance. Entry to Pearse Street square allows you to witness dancers and fire bearing street performers. And the final stop at Irishtown’s Vintage Inn sees more music in a great night’s entertainment that won’t challenge your bank balance. In fact it’s completely free.
