Cinema Roundup 11th July

begin againIrish director John Carney makes his Hollywood debut with Begin Again, which stars acting heavyweights like Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. Like his Dublin set breakout hit, Once, it deals with the love of music and while it lacks depth, it’s a charming little drama that will appeal mainly to music lovers.

Boyhood is the latest from cult Texan director Richard Linklater, most known for his Before trilogy. This one is quite novel, having been shot over a period of 12 years. As such, it documents the growth of its central character from the age of six to 17. It’s quite fascinating to watch a character grow before your eyes in this way, but there’s little else beyond this novelty aspect to keep you hooked.
