As a thank you to the local community of the South East Area, DCC gave away thousands of bulbs, which are hoped will flood the town with colour next spring.

NewsFour was at the green opposite Kiely’s of Donnybrook and talked to those who were carrying out the initiative. Denise Keogh from the community section of DCC thought the people of the community deserved recognition for their efforts throughout the year. “This was the city council’s way of rewarding the residents, local groups and businesses for all the events they took part in at Christmas and during the summer.”

“Beech Hill residents association, Pembroke Cottages association and down as far as Morehampton Terrace have all availed of the giveaway and it’s something that’s really growing, pardon the pun,” said Sean Brennan from Tidy Towns Belmont. “I think it’s really working if you look around the Donnybrook area. Some of the local businesses have worked at making their shop fronts look great and the council has been great supplying the bulbs, flowers and coffins (large plant tubs).”

Brennan hopes that the giveaway encourages people to get creative in their own gardens. “Then when they get the bug they can come out and help us.”

Corinne Sands picked up some bags for International School in Blackrock and told NewsFour about their plans. “Ms Nelson’s class’s current unit for the next six weeks is about sustainability.”

“We are giving out 50,000 bulbs, which are a mixture of Daffodils, Snowdrops and Tulips, in the South East Area overall, so there is a lot of work involved,” said Keogh. “We have emailed all the community groups to let them know about the pickup points. We won’t see it until the spring, but it will be a stunning display.”
