Written, produced and directed by Dubliner Billy Kilkenny, Ireland Rises is set in a public house on Sackville Street during the Easter Rising of 1916. The audience finds out about the events of the Rising along with the cast, as news from the outside world drifts in to the confines of the pub.

With Ireland Rises, Billy Kilkenny pays tribute to the Rising through the traditional Irish music and dance that has become famous across the globe: “Ireland Rises will set up residency in the Tivoli Theatre this summer with eight shows a week. We wanted to show audiences from home and abroad what an important part of our history the Easter Rising was to our nation. Ireland’s traditional music and dance is loved the world over so what better way to tell the story – we know it will be a night everyone will enjoy.”

The play will feature a mix of classic Irish songs such as The Auld Triangle, and new songs composed by Billy Kilkenny and his brother Stephen.

Amongst the cast of just 13 is John Mulligan, whose great-grandfather and his brother, Matthew and Jack Maguire marched from Maynooth to the GPO to be greeted by Pádraig Pearse and James Connolly. With the weight of history behind him, this play means a lot to John: “To perform in this 1916 production nearly 100 years after my great-grandfather and my great-granduncle who fought for Irish freedom feels incredible, I’m honoured and so excited to be a part of it.”

Sponsored by New Ireland Assurance, the play runs until August 31, with matinee and evening shows on the weekend. Previews run until June 21. Tickets cost €24.50, with a pre-theatre dinner package available from €49.50. You can book your tickets online from the Ireland Rises and Tivoli websites, or by calling the box office on (01) 454 4472.
