Railway Union Boys U16s win Joey O’Meara Cup.

Railway Union Under 16 boys’ hockey team won the prestigious Joey O’Meara cup for the first time on Sunday 12th April.

The Cup is the highlight in the under 16 boys’ club calendar as it is a one-day blitz competition involving all the leading hockey clubs in Leinster.

Railway reached the late afternoon final after a series of group and play-off matches from early in the morning. In the final itself they defeated Monkstown 2–1 in a shoot-out, after the game finished in an exciting 0–0 draw.

It was an entertaining game, with chances at both ends. Monkstown won a lot of corners but couldn’t convert as the Railway defence, especially Shomik Chakraborty in goal, played well. Apart from short corners, Monkstown didn’t create much from play, despite controlling the ball for longer periods.

Railway, though, were resolute and always looked dangerous on the attack, Jake Pillow and Conor Larkin, alongside Mateusz Nowakowski, creating good chances that, unfortunately, we failed to convert.

Conor and Mateusz scored for Railway in the penalty shoot-out, but the hero of the day was Shomik, who denied Monsktown in four out of their five attempts.

Well done to all players and thanks to all teams, coaches, umpires, supporters, and organisers who made the day possible.
