Sandymount Gospel Choir’s Cindy Carroll sent this piece to NewsFour to let people know about the choir’s upcoming Open Night!

Every September, people resolve to join evening classes as a way to pass those long winter nights, or to meet new people, or to learn a new skill. Why not join Sandymount Gospel Choir and accomplish three tasks at once?

Sandymount Gospel Choir has been together since 2008 and is well-known in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, where the choir is invited to sing at 6pm Mass on the second and fourth Sunday of every month from September until June.

2014-2015 was a particularly exciting year for the choir. After holding an Open Night in September, several new members joined. In December, the Choir reached the finals of Lyric FM Choirs for Christmas competition, where they sang the Emmylou Harris song Light of the Stable. In May, the Choir performed at its annual concert, raising funds for Camphill Ireland. The Choir finished the year on a high note, having been invited to perform at Christchurch on Sandymount Green, Mount Tabor Nursing Home and on RTÉ Sunday Worship on television and radio.

The Choir is under the expert direction of musician and composer Cathy McEvoy and is accompanied by pianist and flautist Aidan Murphy, who is a well-known singer-songwriter on the Dublin music scene. The Choir is also occasionally joined by other musicians, and has an excellent choreographer to help prepare for performances.

If you are interested in joining, why not come to the Open Night on Tuesday 15 September at 7.30 at Clanna Gael Football Club, Sean Moore Park? All singers and musicians are welcome!
