Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and Sightsavers has announced its newest ambassador, Paralympic skier Kelly Gallagher to mark the occasion.
The visually impaired gold-medalist is helping Sightsavers to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the world’s 800 million people with disabilities.
“I believe that education is a right – it was really important in helping me succeed. I think that everyone, regardless of their country of birth, should be able to enjoy those rights”, said Kelly, who recently spent some time in Senegal with Sightsavers. “I loved being in Senegal and seeing the enthusiasm for inclusive education. It was great to meet teachers, parents and communities all working together to provide an education for children with visual impairments. I am really looking forward to continuing my work with Sightsavers as an ambassador.”
The charity will be holding an interactive digital presentation in Temple Bar’s Meeting House Square this evening from 5 to 8pm. “The Power of Perception” will feature images from Kelly’s time in Senegal. You can also join in on the conversation and show your support by using the #Perception hashtag!
