Cinema Roundup April 15th

Movie of the week - Our Little Sister

Movie of the week – Our Little Sister

Three of the best movies I’ve seen all year open this week, the best of the trio being Japanese drama Our Little Sister. The story of three twenty-something sisters who take in their newly discovered 14-year-old stepsister, it’s the feel good movie of the year, two hours of sheer cinematic bliss. Bring tissues; this one’s a tear-jerker.

The Jungle Book

Disney remake their classic The Jungle Book in grand style with a reboot featuring ground-breaking CG effects that bring the animal cast to life in photo-realistic fashion. Keeping some of the songs, it’s as close to old school, classic Disney as we’ve seen in a long time. Christopher Walken steals the show as King Louis the Orangutan.

Eye in the Sky

Eye in the Sky is a nail-biting political thriller set in bunkers and boardrooms as a drone strike on would-be suicide bombers becomes complicated by the presence of a young girl at the target site. Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman, in his final role, are outstanding, and director Gavin Hood ramps up the tension skillfully.

Metropolis

The Irish Film Institute continue their Sci-Fi season this week with Soylent Green on Saturday, Gattaca on Sunday, and the silent classic Metropolis on Monday. I recommend them all!
