On Monday July 11th, Lord Mayor of Dublin and newly invested Honorary Admiral of Dublin Port Brendan Carr re-enacted of the Casting of the Spear.

Carr sailed out on Dublin Bay with his seven-year-old son Jason for the event, which commemorates the action first performed in 1488 by then Lord Mayor of Dublin, Thomas Mayler. By casting the spear into the Bay, Mayler marked the position of the city boundaries eastwards.

It is a tradition that is honored with an annual re-enactment, a duty performed by the Lord Mayor of Dublin as their first act as Honorary Admiral of Dublin Port. The boat makes it a much easier time for them than it was for Mayler, who cast the spear as far as he could from the shore on horseback!
