A public meeting regarding the health effects of the Poolbeg incinerator is to take place tonight, Thursday 27th October, at 8pm in the Sandymount Hotel, Herbert Road.

Professor Anthony Staines, Chair of Health Systems at DCU, will speak about the impact of the emissions from the Poolbeg incinerator on the health of the residents of Dublin and what locals can do to ensure the air quality is protected.

Professor Staines has previously warned about the health impacts of the incinerator, giving input at the hearings at An Bord Pleanála. The meeting is being organised by the Social Democrats who are calling for a ‘real-time’ and publicly accessible system to monitor the emissions from the Poolbeg incinerator. The incinerator process is known to produce toxic by-products that are harmful and impact public health.

The Social Democrats claim that a publicly accessible live emissions monitoring system will allow local residents to monitor the community’s exposure to these toxins. The possibility of such a system will also be discussed at this meeting.
