Movie of the week - Creature from the Black Lagoon

Movie of the week – Creature from the Black Lagoon

Horror fans are spoilt for choice this Halloween weekend. The Lighthouse is hosting a ‘Classic Monsters’ retrospective over the three day weekend, with screenings of classic Universal horror movies like The Wolfman, Frankenstein and The Invisible Man, along with The Shining, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and of course Halloween. The highlight is a rare screening of Creature from the Black Lagoon in its original 3D format tonight.

The Fly

The Fly

Across the river, The Irish Film Institute is once again the setting for the annual Horrorthon festival. Along with screenings of classics like David Cronenberg’s The Fly and a trio of Peter Cushing movies, it’s a chance to get an early look at some horror movies yet to be released.

After Love

After Love

If horror’s not your thing there are a couple of worthwhile new releases on offer. After Love is a gripping Belgian drama which looks at the awkward relationship between a man and woman who have ended their relationship yet remain living together while they trash out their finances. It’s a beautifully observed piece of work, but definitely not one for a first date.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

Yet another comic book adaptation hits screens this week, but this one isn’t half bad. Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange, the latest Marvel hero to grace the big screen. With stunning effects and a fantastic cast including Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams and Mads Mikkelsen, it’s a lot of fun.
