Movie of the week - Blue Velvet

Movie of the week – Blue Velvet

The Lighthouse’s David Lynch season comes to a close in style this week with a new 30th anniversary print of the director’s finest work, 1986’s Blue Velvet. Set in the small town of Lumberton, it’s an often surreal thriller that peels back the layers to look at the darkside of small town America, with an unforgettably chilling performance from Dennis Hopper. Playing all week, it’s one of the defining movies of the ’80s, and a must see on the big screen.

The Edge of Seventeen

The Edge of Seventeen

The best new release is teen comedy The Edge of Seventeen. Hailee Steinfeld delivers one of 2016’s finest performances as a narcissistic high schooler who finds herself socially isolated when her best friend begins dating her brother, much to her chagrin. Smart, witty and insightful.

Sully

Sully

The story of airline pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who dramatically landed his airbus in New York’s Hudson river in 2009, is dramatised by director Clint Eastwood in Sully. Tom Hanks is solid in the title role, but the film struggles to mine sufficient drama to fill its feature length running time.

Die Hard

Die Hard

If you’re in festive form, the Lighthouse kicks off their Xmas season with screenings of seasonal favourites Die Hard (Friday), Bad Santa and Muppet Christmas Carol (Saturday) and Home Alone and Jingle all the Way (Sunday).
