Summer is upon us and people all over the country are inspired by the good weather to get fit. Dublin 4 is no different and the parks and streets have been flooded with people out running in the last few weeks.

If you prefer the outdoors to the confines of a gym, there are plenty of great running routes close by to choose from. There are also a variety of running apps and sites to help you monitor your progress. A popular one is MapMyRun; it’s free to download and has the benefit of linking to your Facebook so you can show off when you run an impressive stretch! It can also suggest new running routes for you based on your location if you need some inspiration.

If you are new to the running business, here are a few short runs in the local area that will help you as you build up your fitness and stamina.

From Sean Moore Park entrance at Pigeon House Road (opposite the Maxol garage), the lap around the Clanna Gael pitch is a manageable 1.2km.

In Ringsend Park, a quick loop around the green is only 1.1km, perfect to get your heartbeat going with a quick sprint.

The Grand Canal is a good option for a straight route that also stays clear of parks. But avoid it during rush hour as it is crammed with people walking to and from work, and it may drive you to distraction diving in and out of the crowds. From Grand Canal Dock to Charlemont Bridge return is 3.44km.

To clear out the cobwebs and get some sea air, try a run on Sandymount Strand. From the start of the Strand next to Marine Drive to the far end of the promenade (past the Martello tower) is a 4km return trip. To mix it up, there are a series of exercise machines recently installed along the promenade which would add some value to your workout and save on gym fees too.

Another slightly longer route is the Great South Wall Pier, also known as the Bull Wall, which is around 3.5km return. Watch out for gaps in the stones while running!
