The Christmas ads are already on telly to warn us all to get our shopping done, and many of us will be groaning and rolling our eyes, with Halloween just barely behind us but even though the season for giving isn’t here yet, today marks the start of National Giving Week.

National Giving Week, an initiative of the Forum on Philanthropy and Fundraising, is intended to highlight the relevance of Philanthropic enterprise in Ireland, and its importance to the future of Irish society. The initiative was announced as the spearhead of the One Percent Difference campaign, an attempt to raise giving levels across the country. At the website www.onepercentdifference.ie , viewers are invited to calculate the value of one percent of their money, time, how ‘good’ they potentially are and what cause might suit them most to get involved in.

Speaking at a launch event last week, Seamus Mulconry, CEO of Philanthropy Ireland said, “The not for profit sector and charities in Dublin deliver a host of services from medical research to search and rescue. Their efforts and the efforts of countless volunteers play a vital role in not only social services but our sporting and cultural life.”

What do you think readers? Should we give more, as a society? Does it help to be told how much you can afford to give of your Money, Talent or Time? We want to hear your comments.
