Movie of the week - Foxcatcher

Movie of the week – Foxcatcher

One of the big Oscar contenders hits our screens this week in the form of Foxcatcher. Based on the true story of the troubled relationship between America’s then richest man John du Pont and a pair of wrestling brothers, it’s a chilling slow burn of a movie. Steve Carell dons a prosthetic nose and steps out of his comedic comfort zone to brilliantly portray du Pont with sublime menace.

Taken 3

Taken 3

One that’s in no danger of winning awards is Taken 3.  Liam Neeson returns for a sequel that’s the very definition of uninspired. Nobody even gets “taken” this time out, with Neeson hunting the villains who framed him for his ex-wife’s murder. The first movie was enjoyable but after two poor sequels this series has run its course.

Into the Woods

Into the Woods

Into the Woods is the screen adaptation of the popular Broadway show. It’s quite fun for a while, and Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and Chris Pine take to the material with relish, but at almost two hours it outstays its welcome with a tacked on third act.
