Cinema Roundup February 13th

Movie of the Week - Top Gun

Movie of the Week – Top Gun

I feel the need… the need… for speed! The movie that made Tom Cruise a megastar, Top Gun, comes to the Lighthouse for one night only this Saturday. A blistering romp of jet fuel and illicit romances, no movie quite captures the spirit of the ’80s like the late director Tony Scott’s masterpiece. Get out to the Lighthouse and have a bandit night!

The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride

Also in the Lighthouse on Saturday is another seminal ’80s movies – Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride. Adapted by acclaimed screenwriter William Goldman from his own novel, it’s a charming fairytale given a postmodern twist.

The Philadelphia Story

The Philadelphia Story

At the Irish Film Institute, the brilliant 1940 comedy The Philadelphia Story plays all week in a newly restored print. Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepburn bring their A games for this defining work of comic genius.

You might recall how I raved about Barry Lyndon when it played as part of the Lighthouse’s Stanley Kubrick season back in October. If you ignored my advice back then you have another chance to catch it on the big screen as it plays Saturday afternoon at the IFI. Don’t blow your chance this time to see one of the most beautifully shot movies ever made.

If you missed Interstellar on its original run, or you just fancy seeing it again, it returns to the IFI all week – this time in glorious 70mm.

It’s a quiet week for new releases, but Pelo Malo is one worth checking out. From Venezuala, this is an at times heartbreaking and charming look at a young boy torn between two cultures.
