On July 4th, a group of boys from Railway Union together with parents and coaches travelled to Cork and played a series of successful and enjoyable matches against five teams from Munster. All matches were played at Cork Harlequins Hockey Club who have a long association with Railway Union.

The highlight of the tour was the opportunity to see Ireland play the Netherlands in a friendly match at the Mardyke which formed an important part of Ireland’s preparation for the Rio Olympics. Netherlands are rated No. 2 side in World rankings so it was a wonderful occasion to see hockey skills of the highest level.

The Irish hockey team have made history by being the first team (as opposed to individual athletes) from Ireland to qualify for the Olympics Games since London in 1948.

Everyone in Railway Union will be looking forward to their progress against the best in the world. All matches are being shown live on RTE so it presents an opportunity for a wider audience to enjoy the sport.

Hockey coaching for boys takes place every Saturday evening under lights from 6p.m. in Railway Union during the season, starting in September so it allows boys who already play rugby, soccer and gaelic games to enjoy another sport.
