Movie of the Week – Man With a Movie Camera
Fans of Soviet silent cinema are in for a treat this week. Newly restored, Dziga Vertov’s 1929 classic Man With a Movie Camera plays all week at the Irish Film Institute. Regularly voted the greatest documentary of all time, Vertov takes an average day in the city of Kiev and turns it into an action epic, utilising every cinematic trick in the book, many of which are still startling today.
Strike
On Tuesday at the IFI you can catch Sergei Eisenstein’s 1925 Strike, which explores the aftermath of a factory workers’ suicide. The film made leaps in how movies were constructed, with editing practices that have now become standard but were revolutionary at the time.
Back to the Future
Another classic of a different kind is Back to the Future, which plays in the Lighthouse on Tuesday as part of its ‘Films you’d love your kids to see’ season. The following day The Karate Kid plays.
54: The Director’s Cut
Over the bank holiday weekend the Lighthouse plays host to GAZE, the International LGBT Film Festival. The highlight is the Irish premiere of 54: The Director’s Cut, which has won rave reviews in restoring the 1998 film to how its director originally intended.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
The big new release of the week is Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, the fifth installment in a franchise that’s rapidly running out of ideas. It’s great to see Tom Cruise performing his own stunts, but the movie has little to offer beyond a couple of dazzling set pieces.
Beyond the Reach
Beyond the Reach sees businessman Michael Douglas hunting human prey in an attempt to cover up a fatal accidental shooting. The movie starts off intriguingly but quickly descends into camp.
