The Sean Moore Awards 2016 took place on the evening of May 24th at Clanna Gael Fontenoy. In attendance on the night were the Deputy Lord Mayor, Chris Andrews with Alice Foley Mayor of Ringsend presenting the prizes to each category winner.

Ballsbridge ICA celebrates 10th birthday
Ballsbridge ICA was formed in 2006 and has been going strong since. The 10th Birthday was celebrated with lunch in Rolys and a party with birthday cake in the Iris Charles Centre, Sandymount, where the guild meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month from September to June.

Fun at Ringsend Dog Show
Ringsend’s first-ever dog show was held on Saturday, April 30th in Ringsend Park. On a cold but sunny day, dog lovers and locals alike gathered for a day of fun, prizes, hampers and dogs! This is part of the Ringsend Community Week that ran from April 26th to May 2nd with the annual May Day parade.

Wakedock – Cable Wakeboarding in Dublin’s Docklands
Dublin’s only cable wakeboard park, Wakedock, was set up by Colin Harris and his wife Nina in 2013. Harris is well known in watersports circles in Ireland. His late father ran Surfdock, the windsurfing school, which has been in existence for twenty-five years.

A Proclamation for schoolchildren
This year, as part of the 1916 centenary celebrations, March 15th was designated Proclamation Day. Every school in Ireland was invited to write a new Proclamation for 2016, using the 1916 Proclamation as a foundation. The intention was that the new Proclamation would reflect the values, ideals and aspirations of the generation of 2016.

A Dublin 4 school has scooped a top prize at the ‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ National Youth and Media Awards. Emily McAlinden, a first year student from The Teresian School, on the Stillorgan Road in Donnybrook, was a winner in the age 12-14 poster category “Quote.”

Some upcoming local events
This June Bank Holiday, North Wall Quay will play host to the Dublin Port Riverfest. Organised by the Dublin Port Company and the Docklands Business Forum, the festival will provide a jam-packed programme of entertainment and family fun including the arrival of three tall ships and four schooners which will berth at North Wall Quay for the weekend.

The Marian Mile
April 19th saw the culmination of Marian College’s participation in the ISPCC’s anti-bullying ‘Shield Campaign’ with an active fundraiser called, ‘The Marian Mile.’ The event was part of an ISPCC initiative which takes place annually and involves 200 schools nationwide.

The Citizens’ Breakfast
Bloomsday is just around the corner yet again and a special new event will have its inauguration this year in Dublin 4. ‘The Citizen’s Breakfast’ is a community play that will be performed on Shelbourne Road on June 16th, and will feature professional actors and willing members of the Ringsend-Irishtown-Sandymount area.

‘25 to Clanwilliam’ – a theatrical triumph
The Battle of Mount Street Bridge has only recently been recognised as one of the bravest and bloodiest engagements of the 1916 Rising amongst the general public, although it has long been acknowledged as such by the residents of Ringsend and Irishtown, as many have family members who took part in it.

Play Review: ‘The Tenements’
‘The Tenements’ was written by Paul Kennedy for the Waters Edge Community Drama group and was presented to the public in Ringsend/Irishtown Community Centre on Wednesday May 24th – 26th. The community group who performed this lively play are part of the CDETB Adult Education programme.

Animal adaptation in Dublin Bay
The stretch of Dublin bay covering both the North and South Bull has been deemed to be an area of particular importance as a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. This of course punches above its weight and is in the same league as many natural wonders and exotic destinations.
